Chase Matthew: Pentecostal Roots, Doubt, and Hearing God Speak “You’re About to Find Out”
About this Episode
Country artist Chase Matthew joins Brooke Taylor and Pastor Mark Evans on The Upload for a deeply personal conversation about faith, grief, and discovering purpose. Raised Pentecostal in a family rooted in church, Chase shares how his faith journey wasn’t always straightforward. There were seasons when he questioned whether he even believed in God at all.
In the midst of grieving the loss of his aunt—one of his biggest musical inspirations—Chase found himself asking God for a sign: If You’re real, show me my purpose. What followed was a moment he describes as unmistakable. A direct answer from God: “You’re about to find out.” That phrase—YATFO—became his mantra, scribbled across notebooks, and soon marked a turning point as he began playing in his church’s youth band.
Chase opens up about growing up in the Pentecostal church, witnessing moments like speaking in tongues, the meaning behind his Isaiah 54:17 tattoo (“No weapon formed against you shall prosper”), and his ongoing struggles with shame. The conversation also dives into big questions about the afterlife and what Chase imagines heaven might be like.
