Wikipedia explains prudence as, "The ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. It is classically considered to be a virtue, and one of the four cardinal virtues." It is showing care and thought for the future. Merriam-Webster says, "The prudent are marked by wisdom. They are shrewd in the management of practical affairs. Discreet."
